Choose a clinic
A plan for the knee you want to use.
Knee pain can affect walking, stairs, sleep and sport. We can explore care without surgery, injections, keyhole surgery and replacement, depending on what is causing the problem and what you want to get back to.
Care before surgery
Exercise and strengthening, a physiotherapy referral, weight management where relevant, pain relief, a walking aid or an injection may help. I offer steroid injections, Ostenil Plus in selected cases and Arthrosamid for selected knees. We discuss suitability and expected benefits in clinic. PRP is described on my non-surgical care page for discussion, but is not currently bookable with me.
Partial or total replacement?
A partial replacement may suit a knee where the damage is confined to one part; a total replacement treats more widespread damage. The choice depends on your symptoms, examination, imaging and health. We can compare the options, including whether more non-surgical care is right for now.
Mako robotic-assisted surgery
I perform Mako robotic-assisted knee replacements at Spire Fylde Coast where appropriate. The system helps with planning and guides the surgeon during the operation; the surgeon remains in control. It is not the right approach for everyone, and it does not guarantee less pain or a faster recovery. The Blackpool Gazette has published the story of Spire Fylde Coast first Mako robotic-assisted knee replacement, which I performed.
Meniscal tears: get your knee moving again
A torn meniscus can cause pain, swelling, catching or difficulty trusting your knee. I can assess the injury and talk through rehabilitation first. If symptoms persist or the knee locks, keyhole knee arthroscopy may offer a way to repair the tear where possible or remove a damaged fragment.
Ligament injuries and ACL reconstruction
An ACL injury can leave the knee feeling unstable, especially when you twist, pivot or return to sport. I will assess the ligament, your activity goals and any other damage, then discuss rehabilitation and whether ACL reconstruction could help restore stability. Your recovery plan is just as important as the operation.
Knee replacement: your questions answered
What are the benefits of a knee replacement?
The main benefit - and the main indication for surgery - is relief of pain, both while mobilising and at rest or at night. As pain relief comes, most people see their function and mobility improve with it. If you limp because of knee pain, that often gets better after surgery. Whether you can reduce walking aids depends on your other joints, your back and the strength you rebuild - we look at the whole picture, not just the knee.
What are the risks of a knee replacement?
The vast majority of patients do well from these surgeries, which is why they are undertaken in significant numbers in the UK - around 80-85% of patients are satisfied after a knee replacement. It is still major surgery. Problems can include infection (about 1%), blood clots in the legs (about 5%) or lungs (well under 0.5%, but serious), numbness beside the scar, stiffness, instability, nerve or blood-vessel injury, ongoing pain, and wear or loosening of the joint over time. Some problems need further surgery. Your health and your knee shape your own numbers, and I am always happy to talk them through.
Partial or total knee replacement - which would I need?
A partial replacement can suit a knee where the damage is confined to one part; a total replacement treats more widespread damage. The choice depends on your symptoms, examination, imaging and general health - we compare the options together in clinic.
What is recovery like?
You will usually be moving and walking with help soon after surgery. Pain relief, physiotherapy and exercises rebuild movement and strength; expect a walking aid at first. Swelling and stiffness take time to settle and recovery varies - your team will advise on wound care, driving, work and getting back to activities.
